Eating a healthy diet usually goes out the window when you’re homeless, living off scraps, hand-outs or picking things out of skips and bins. One of our aims here at Cosgarne Hall is to educate people to cook and learn nutrition on a budget. We cook a meal in the communal kitchen twice per week to get people together around food and socialise, learning skills in the kitchen with our volunteers. We also cook large batches of meals such stews and chillies to freeze into portions and give to people when they first arrive at Cosgarne so they can have a hot meal and a good night’s sleep. Another gap we fill is helping people who have been sanctioned of their benefits and are not entitled to a food bank voucher to have access to basic food rations until their sanction is lifted.
