VOLUNTEERS

VOLUNTEERING

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP

  • THERE ARE SO MANY WAYS TO GET INVOLVED

You can help us in a number of ways, such as giving us your time to volunteer, making a donation, giving us goods or providing services.

  • DONATE TO SUPPORT ONSITE ACTIVITIES

We always love to receive items to use in our courses and groups, such as art and craft materials and kitchen utensils.

  • PASS ON SKILLS, MENTOR, LEAD AND ORGANISE

We try to offer our residents a range of activities, on and off site, so that they can occupy their time constructively, helping them to move forwards to an independent life. Volunteer to run or support a session.

  • HELP US PROMOTE OUR CAUSE

We are not a big charity, and need lots of support on social media and in the community to raise awareness for our cause, share the work we do and fundraise.

WHAT DOES A HARBOUR VOLUNTEER DO?

All sorts of things – from teaching cooking skills to leading arts and crafts sessions, taking residents on fishing trips, feeding the Llama, helping our maintenance team out with building tasks, administration and anything else that can support us in our mission to alleviate homelessness and support people to gain confidence and live more independently.

The main thing is that volunteers share our ethos and – it doesn’t matter if you have a little time to give or a lot, we welcome volunteers with a range of skills and interests.

All volunteers have an induction and have support with training should they need it and many people who volunteer with us go on to employment having increased their confidence and gained valuable work experience with us.

We take students on placements and those who need observation time and can help volunteers with references and networking for future placements. If you are interested in volunteering with Harbour we’d love to hear from you.

Do I have to commit to coming regularly?

Not at all! We have a whole range of different volunteering opportunities – some involve running weekly sessions but we also have people who come for a one off eg. to help out with our Christmas meal, or sporadically to help with trips, run workshops, do some gardening. We are completely led by you.

Can I come and have a look round first?

Of course! We want everyone to feel comfortable and to decide for themselves whether this is the right environment, so feel free to send us an email or give us a ring and we’d be happy to give you a tour.

What sessions do you have that I can come and help with?

We currently run regular art groups and yoga sessions, there’s always help needed in the kitchen, garden and smallholding, and we run outings to the theatre, local gardens and beaches. You’re more than welcome to join any of these or even come up with your own club to run! We also have a casual coffee afternoon where we invite staff, volunteers and residents to come and have a hot drink, play some board games and have a chat.

Do I need a DBS

Yes you do need a DBS but that is something that we can sort out for you once you start the induction process.

Do you offer any training?

Yes we do. All external volunteers receive a full induction and are also trained in how to use Naloxone. There is also an opportunity to receive your Food Hygiene Level 2 and other training specific to whichever activity you choose to get involved in. We are more than happy to help you gain specific skills and experience if you have a career in mind that this volunteering could help with.
